Triathlon Club

Swimming, cycling and running are the three sports that make up a triathlon. As a club we offer many sessions: 2 runs, 3 cycles and 3 swims as well as a strength and conditioning session each week. Though some members do, there is no pressure to come to all the sessions, some members prefer to take part in just one aspect of a triathlon, while others enjoy training once a week in each discipline. We are a very relaxed club, and people can take the sport as serious as they want to. We have athletes of all levels, from people who have never so much as cycled before, all the way to athletes who compete at a national level. The team is a super welcoming and friendly bunch, and we hold socials most weeks, as well as running trips away each semester. Whether you’ve never done a triathlon before or you’ve been competing for years, we’d love to have you along!


Upon graduating from the club, you remain part of our family. You are added to a Facebook group chat, as well an email list that allow us all to stay in contact. We invite all alumni back for our annual events and many come back, both to marshal and volunteer. This year we are hoping to have an alumni gathering in November so watch this space!

Community Engagement

As a club, we organise 2 big sporting events – the Autumn Duathlon and the Spring Triathlon. These events are very popular, and places fill up very quickly, with hundreds of people coming to compete – including alumni and many members of the local community. Prizes for our competitors are kindly donated by independent companies in St Andrews, with whom we have a very good relationship, having worked with them for many years now.

Last year we worked with various primary schools in Fife – club members led 3 sessions in the lead up to a local triathlon event for children. This was done to help younger children to get involved in a new sport (or 3 new sports at a time!) and was very successful.

Later in 2020 we plan on launching a ‘Women in Open Water’ programme alongside EFT and triathlon Scotland. This is a great way for women to try something new in an open and friendly environment!

We also have a good partnership with the local adult triathlon club – East Fife Triathlon Club (EFT). Our President, Lucy, coaches many of their sessions and we attend their event in Cupar every year.

Charity Fundraising

Each year, the Triathlon Club organises an Autumn Duathlon and Spring Triathlon which raise money for both the Club and a charity or cause of the committee’s choosing. We believe that it is important to give back to our local community so where possible, we try to support a local group. With our events increasing in popularity and size, we now raise an increasing amount of money each year which allows us to continue to support a wide range of worthy causes such as Families First and CHAS.

In addition to the two sporting events we organise, the club takes part in RAG week where we set a target to virtually travel to a different European city from St Andrews using recorded distances from our training and members’ activities throughout that week. There are prizes for the individuals who contribute the most, with members entering by putting in a donation.

As previously mentioned, we host 2 events each year, a spring sprint triathlon and autumn sprint duathlon. These are open to both students and the public of any ability and are a great way for athletes new to the sport to start off, as well as veterans looking for a bit of friendly competition. As well as raising funds for the club that help subsidise membership fees, they also raise a large amount of money for local charities.
